Cars 4 Christmas & 99.7 KY

Sharon came to the ****  Multi-Service Center for the first time in August of 2002.  She had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and had surgery. Sharon has been a nurse at ****** Medical Center for 12 years.  She had used her benefits from work and she and her husband were struggling to cope with utility bills.  We were able to assist them with their water bill and provide food.  At that time she was hoping to work on light duty while undergoing treatments for the cancer. Sharon's husband Rick drives a dump truck and often is not called upon to work with much consistency.
I have not served Sharon since August until this week when she came requesting help with their electric bill and food.  She has not been able to work during her treatments and has been ill as a result. In spite of the difficulties and side effects of chemotherapy she remains hopeful of returning to work HOWEVER, she shared with me that her car is very unreliable, needs works on the transmission, etc.  She has been getting a ride to her treatments and does not feel the car will get her to and from work when she is able to return.  She fears it would leave her on the side of the highway.
Since I just heard about Cars4Christmas this week I shared the possibility of requesting a car with Sharon.  Since she does not currently have a phone or access to the internet I offered to tell her story and send her a copy.  She was very grateful for this effort and for any of the help she has received.
Sharon's serious illness calls for an ability to cope that is beyond many people.  Having a reliable car would relieve her of one more worry during this time.  It could give her spirits a boost and remove one more barrier to her return to work, when she begins to feel better.
I thank you for taking the time to read my version of Sharon's "story".  Should you  have any questions, please contact me through e-mail or by phone **********. Sharon may be contacted by mail at the above address.
What a great thing you are doing!
Respectfully submitted,
Cathy ******

Dear Cars 4 Christmas & KYYS

I would like to nominate my sister for a recipient of a car. She is a 53 yr old widow, returning to school. Mary has been on disability for a few years, with severe chronic asthma/bronchitis and severe back problems. After her husband passed away in August of 2002, she decided she wanted to learn a vocation and become self supporting. She chose a career helping others with something she knows first hand. Respiratory therapy. Financial aid helped her get started at Concorde Career Institute in Kansas City. However, just before she started, her car didn't.  It is old, and needs more than its worth to be fixed. She has been able to find a ride with another student for now, but needs her own transportation.  She does not have the finances nor the credit to obtain one on her own. I would appreciate very much your consideration and bless you for the good work you are doing.

Angela is a single parent with two children. One is a little girl with health problems that has occurred since way back. She is now 8 yrs. old and still has to report to physician for medications. she is my daughter and has to live with me, and wants to go to nursing school. She presently has a job, but has to miss work to attend to her child's needs.  She deserves a reliable car for not only herself but her children as well. She cannot afford to buy a good used car as well as a new one. She also needs a home for her and her children. She is planning to go to college as soon as she gets enrolled. If anyone needs a car, she surely does.    Bettie

Their medicare supplemental insurance was lost because the company was sold and the new company would not pay for retirees.  If you are in your late 70s, your husband has surgery for serious vein and artery problems, and your family income is $1200 per month from social security, medical bills are paid by putting it on credit cards.  That is the only way Marge and Dick ***** could see to pay their obligations.  This choice quickly led to loss of all credit and declaration of bankrupty.

The ******  live near 95th and metcalf in a rental apartment.  Dick has to make the trip across town to the VA Hospital to get any medical care.  Their only car was totaled in an accident a few months ago.  It was barely running anyway!  Since that time, they have had to depend on the generosity of a couple relatives and a few friends.  The Johnson County Bus comes to Metcalf South, but they are unable to walk that far to meet it.  The bus that will pick up a handicapped person at their home cannot go as far as the VA Hospital.

A dependable car is desperately needed by the ****** .  They believe they could pay for the insurance, gasoline and routine care.

Could the Car Santa stop at their house?
